In Addition to Research, the Partnership will Provide Funding from the NFL Foundation for Educational Resources to Help Prevent Youth Gambling Exposure

NEW YORK – June 4, 2025 – The National Football League (NFL) today announced a partnership with the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) to address growing concerns around gambling behaviors among college athletes and students. The NFL Foundation will contribute $600,000 over three years to support independent, peer-reviewed research being led by the ICRG that aims to explore the prevalence, risk factors, and impacts of gambling behaviors in these populations.

While initial studies have indicated that college athletes may be at higher risk for gambling problems, there remains a lack of comprehensive, current data on how college populations interact with online sports betting platforms. This NFL-ICRG initiative will empower independent researchers to explore a wide range of topics with the goal of informing data-driven prevention strategies, education, and policies aimed at reducing gambling-related harm. Grant applications will be peer-reviewed prior to the selection of the final recipient by the ICRG Independent Scientific Advisory Board.

Additionally, the NFL will fund an update to the ICRG’s “Talking with Children About Gambling” educational resources to equip parents, coaches, and educators with practical guidance to help prevent youth gambling exposure before college. Educational materials will be widely available online and distributed to schools, community sports organizations, and youth programs nationwide.

“We’re proud to partner with the ICRG to advance research that can drive meaningful solutions and address a critical gap in the understanding of gambling behaviors among college athletes and students,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting responsible gambling and fostering a safe and supportive environment for athletes, fans, and communities.”

“The NFL has once again demonstrated its commitment to player and fan protection by supporting this critical research targeting young adults,” said Arthur Paikowsky, President of ICRG. “The NFL and ICRG together will make a meaningful contribution to understanding and implementing policies and programs that support a safer gambling environment.”

Strengthening the NFL’s Commitment to Responsible Gambling

The ICRG partnership builds on the NFL’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible gambling, complementing existing initiatives with organizations like the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC).

Through these partnerships, the NFL continues to demonstrate its commitment to addressing emerging challenges in the ever-evolving sports betting landscape and to providing fans, athletes and communities with the tools and resources they need to engage responsibly.

Joyce (Joy) Balls-Berry, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine and core leader for the newly established Health Disparities and Equity Core in the Knight ADRC, has joined the ICRG’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB provides the ICRG with intellectual leadership on the direction of the grants program and serves as the firewall to ensure that there is no undue influence on research from industry funding.

Prior to joining Washington University School of Medicine, Balls-Berry was an assistant professor of epidemiology and senior associate consultant at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She completed her formal education at Xavier University of Louisiana with graduate training at Washington University School of Medicine and The University of Toledo. Balls-Berry completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in health equity, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Florida.

Her work as a scientist centers on increasing awareness of the importance of community-patient engagement in research to increase health equity in minority and under-resourced communities. Recently, she completed a PCORI project to expand the efforts of the Minority Women in Research Network, which she established in 2011. The network’s mission is to promote community-patient engagement in research conducted by minority women scientists interested in research collaborations, academic scholarship, innovation and dissemination. As an educator, Balls-Berry received the Mayo Clinic Teacher of Year for the Graduate School and Educator of the Year for the Center for Clinical and Translational Science awards. The faculty and the student body vote on these awards. Recently, she shared her story of living with dyslexia and handling personal challenges as TEDx Talk.

BEVERLY, MASS. — March 29, 2023—The International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) proudly announces the publication of an important study from the first national survey of sports wagering in the prestigious journal, JAMA Network Open. Led by Dr. Joshua Grubbs of the University of New Mexico, this project has found higher rates of alcohol use and binge drinkers among sports bettors.

Background and Findings: The research was supported by the Sports Wagering Research Fund of the ICRG, which includes donations from the American Gaming Association, MGM Resorts International, DraftKings, Caesars Entertainment, Entain, NASCAR, Hard Rock International, the PGA, and IGT. “We are immensely grateful for the support from our partners, which enables us to pursue research that makes a meaningful difference,” said ICRG President Art Paikowsky.

Dr. Joshua Grubbs, the principal investigator, notes, “The general patterns we’ve observed indicate that individuals who bet online or via apps engage in riskier behaviors. A key area we are yet to explore is whether those betting on their phones consume more alcohol than those betting in-person at sportsbooks or through gambling kiosks.”

Impact and Applications: This study underscores the urgent need for targeted public health interventions and informed regulatory policies to mitigate the risks associated with sports betting and alcohol consumption. “Our research highlights a troubling trend of excessive alcohol use among sports bettors,” explained Dr. Grubbs. “We must use these insights to formulate effective strategies that promote responsible gaming and alcohol consumption.”

ICRG’s Role and Future Directions: As a leader in research on gambling disorder and responsible gambling, the ICRG is committed to supporting investigations that will be the foundation for the development of effective, evidence-based policies and programs.
