DISCLAIMER
Research priorities, peer review, and funding decisions are overseen by ICRG’s independent Scientific Advisory Board. Contributing lotteries and ICRG Board members do not participate in those decisions. Financial support does not constitute ICRG endorsement of a lottery, its products, or its responsible gaming programs.
Importantly, ICRG complements (not replaces) state-funded treatment programs. Its
exclusive focus is on research and education to:
- Prevent gambling-related harm
- Improve player awareness
- Promote safer play
PURPOSE
The Lottery Research & Education Fund pools contributions from participating lotteries to support independent research on lottery player behavior, gambling-related harm, and approaches to prevention and player protection. Its purpose is to generate evidence that can inform public policy, prevention, and practice.
This model enables lotteries to participate in large-scale, high-quality research. Pooled contributions expand the resources available for independent research on lottery participation and gambling-related harm. Participation helps lotteries:
- Apply science-based strategies to operations
- Support transparent, evidence-informed approaches to player protection
- Integrate responsible gaming into long-term strategy
STRATEGIC VALUE
- Addresses Funding Gaps: Research remains one of the most underfunded areas in problem gambling services across states.
- Improves Decision-Making: Evidence-based insights guide program design, funding allocation, and public awareness efforts.
- Supports Evaluation: Independent research helps identify which approaches reduce gambling-related harm and where improvements are needed.
- Builds Collaboration: Connects lotteries with a global network of researchers and best practices.
